Hi there, My hubby and I run Japan Made, a Japanese fabrics and kimono online store. We import all our textiles direct from Osaka and Kyoto and sell them via our website www.japanmade.com.au and at markets around Sydney.
Gaku, my husband is from Chiba on the East coast of Japan and whilst living with him in Japan I fell in love with Japanese textiles.

Dawn S. writes: Hello, I would like to tell you about a great shop in Mittagong. It is basically curtain and soft furnishing fabrics, but there is a great range and the staff are really helpful. They also make curtains, supply rods and tracks and also sell ready-made curtains. I found that they were really helpful and accommodated all my reqests, beyond the 'call of duty'. They will also take orders to make specific things, if you don't want to do the hard work, like cushions, throws, table clothes etc.
Worth the drive to the Southern Highlands, enjoy a coffee and the atmosphere.

There's a high end bridal/after five shop Saigon Fabrics, at 78 Erskine street, Sydney ( alos behind Wynyard Station)

The Sydney suburb of Burwood has Vicson Fabrics in the Burwood Plaza, 42 Railway parade. They have a great range of fold over elastics and ruffled elastic ( for necklines). Not a huge range but very useful.

CABRAMATTA - multiple shops catch the train or drive. lots of shops packed with fabric. Usually no labels with care instructions or fibre content. Bargaining is a must, they will almost always reduce their prices when asked.

Lots of polyester prints and plains, also plenty of wools, evening fabrics,, brocades, knits and cottons year-round. Fibre content labels on all bolts. Some trims. Reasonable prices. Hobby Sew is in Pennant Hills Road, Pennant Hills . They have a big selection of fabrics and craft supplies. They are behind the Pennant Hills Hotel across the road from the railway station. Their phone no is (02) 9980 8966. They also carry a hughe range of Patchwork fabrics.
at Parramatta is great for nice but inexpensive fabrics as well. It is in Chruch Street, Parramatta next door to Westpac Bamk down near the old David Jones Building.

Lots of great priced silks and other fabrics, and all that you need to then dye fabrics to your desired colours. Sylvia the owner is really helpful and so knowledgeable about how to achieve the best result. It’s one of those stores that the more you look the more hidden gems you will find. Worth a look.

They do end of designer runs and imported dress fabrics, with a huge variety that is constantly being added to. They get end of season fabrics from Australian designers like Lisa Ho, Scanlan and Theodore, and Tigerlilly. The staff are all lovely and willing to help, giving samples and advice. They have great sales a few times a year and they give student discounts as well. Definitely worth a visit, I'm always going back for more fabric. !!!!
